"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader."

quote by Margaret Fuller

Friday Five

Today's topic at Eve's Fan Garden-
This week we are going to make you think!!! What were the FIVE BEST BOOKS you read this year? (and no cheating and listing more than five!!)
Ack!! No adding more than five to my list?!?! I read a lot of good books this year so this is going to be difficult. Here goes nothing...

1. Clockwork Angel

Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments is one of my favorite series so I was thrilled when she announced that she was writing a prequel series, The Infernal Devices. Clockwork Angel did not disappoint! With the setting in London (one of my favorite places on earth) and Will (*swoon*) I think I like it even more than the MI books (gasp!).

I know a lot of people didn't like the conclusion to Hunger Games series but I loved it. It was brutal and intense and heartbreaking and I thought it was perfect. I'll repeat what I said about it when I read it- Suzanne Collins ripped my heart out, broke it into a million pieces, stomped on the pieces and then put it back together again in a forever altered state. What an amazing conclusion to the trilogy!

Hello, my name is Amy and I'm a Jane Austen addict. I LOVE all things Austen so when Elizabeth Eulberg announced she was writing Prom & Prejudice I immediately put it on my to-read list. I read this book in one sitting, ignoring all the other things I should be doing, I just could not put it down. Elizabeth stayed true to the Pride & Prejudice story but put enough of her own twist on it to make it original. Oh my Will Darcy! This is a must read for all Austen addicts!

I had heard a lot of great things about this book from my book blogging friends so I was really excited to get my hands on it. I was not disappointed- what a beautiful, romantic, rebellious book. I have a new motto thanks to Ally Condie- "Do not go gentle!" I'm really looking forward to the next installment in this series.

This is the only non-YA, non-fantasy book on my list. (Maybe I ought to branch out a bit more.) This book took me a little while to get into because it is a collection of letters but once I got used to the writing style and different characters I fell in love with it. I laughed, I cried and I cheered- it's a beautiful story!

It's painful to have to stop there- there are so many more books I could list but I'm hitting publish now to stop myself from making a runner-up list.

Voice Male Concert

Last week Sarah, Rae, Genell, Christy and I went to the Voice Male Christmas concert. It was a fabulous night! The company was wonderful (as always!) and the concert was a blast. Voice Male is always so much fun!

I recorded them performing Jamaican Noel- they were so much better in person than this video shows but it still gives a taste of the evening.

Matched Book Launch Party

Last Saturday I went to Ally Condie's Matched launch party at King's English in Salt Lake. As with all King's English events it was a fabulous afternoon. I love that the staff welcome me by name at any YA book event. I also love their outlook on life-

Ally talked about Matched and her writing process and then signed books. It was so nice to meet her. Ally is fabulous!

Lisa, Lauren & I

You need to read Matched, it is fantastic!!

(We're doing a giveaway at EFG but you have to enter by Dec 13th so hurry!)

Friday Five

From Eve's Fan Garden:
Today’s Friday Five is a double header – we want to know your top 5 books made into movies that worked and your top 5 books made into movies that failed.
Successes
1. Harry Potter Series- I love these movies! LOVE them!!! The cast is stellar and the scripts stay pretty true to the books. They do have flaws but the pros far outweigh the cons.
2. Pride and Prejudice- I love the long six hour version and the two hour version. They are both so different and capture different things about the story that I love.
3. Anne of Green Gables*- I've mentioned before that I grew up reading these books and that Gilbert Blythe was my first literary love. I also love the movies. They are so well done. *Disclaimer- I love the first two Anne of Green Gables adaptions. The third one is a horrid and doesn't even exist in my world.
4. The Abyss- did you know this was based on a book? I was surprised as well. I love this movie and was thrilled to find there was a book as well. I think the fact that I read the book after I had seen the movie helped immensely because I already had the actors faces in my mind when I read it.
5. Sense and Sensibility- Emma Thompson is a genius! Her screenplay adaption of this book is brilliant. Plus the cast is absolutely perfect.

Failures
1. Twilight- what an EPIC fail. I will always love this movie because of the fun times I had surrounded it's filming and release but it's not a good movie. The subsequent movies have been better (not great, but better) but Twilight is painful to rewatch.
2. PS I Love You- I haven't actually seen this movie but just based on the trailer I can tell they ruined this beautiful book so I refuse to see it.
3. James and the Giant Peach- This is my favorite Roald Dahl book. I read it more times than I can count growing up. I was so disappointed with the movie. I was so sad because it could have been so good.
4. The DaVinci Code- I didn't hate this one but it's wasn't nearly as fabulous as it could have been.
5. I'm having a hard time thinking of another one. I'm sure it will come to me and I will come back and edit this.

Too funny not to share

If you are from Provo or went to BYU and got married at a young age please don't be offended- it's all in good fun :)

Festival of Trees plus some silliness

On Saturday a Rae, Genell, Christy and I went to the Festival of Trees in Salt Lake. I'd never been to the festival before, I was amazed at creativity of some of the trees.
After the festival Meg joined us at Joe's Crab Shack for dinner and some craziness.

*sigh*

Justin Furstenfeld (the lead singer of Blue October) performed an acoustic concert last week in California. My friends Donna and Janicca were able to go. Janicca called me while Justin was singing a Lady in Red cover. It was so beautiful, even through a cell phone connection. Donna got video of the performance- enjoy!

Thanksgiving Weekend

For Thanksgiving I went to Panguitch. Neil and Patricia, Josh and Natalie and their girls, and Aaron and Erika and their boys came down and we had a fabulous weekend. We ate, went sledding, ate, watched movies, ate, read, ate, played cards, baked cookies and ate some more. It was so great to spend time getting to know everyone better.

On Thanksgiving day Bob and Virginia, their daughter Aimee and her husband and their daughter Sophie joined us. It was chaos and crowded and so much fun.

Here are a bunch of pictures from the weekend-

Friday Five

I was a slacker last week and didn't do a Friday Five because I was busy being a bum at my parents house so I'm going to use last Friday's topic from Eve's Fan Garden this week.
This week on our Friday Five, we want to share with you five things we are most thankful for in our lives!
1. My Family, both immediate and extended
We're crazy, loud, and dysfunctional but we love and support each other when we need it.

2. My Friends
I have amazing friends. They put up with my quirks and silliness. I ♥ them!

3. My Co-workers
I am extremely lucky to have a job that I love and 99% of the reason I love it is because of the people I work with.

4. Music

"Without music, life would be a mistake." ~Friedrich Nietzsche

"Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness." ~Maya Angelou

"Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable." ~Leonard Bernstein

I think those quotes sum up my thoughts nicely :)

5. Reading
My mom started reading to me when I was too young to comprehend what she was saying and that started a lifetime love of books. There is nothing like escaping into a new world and making new friends.

Happy Birthday to Me!

This video is from last year but it still makes me smile like a silly fangirl :) I don't think it will ever get old.
